Angela Stewart

June 2007

Hi! My name is Angela Stewart and I am a native of Winston-Salem. Although I’ve lived in other cities (Detroit, Nashville and Dallas) for short periods, I’ve always considered the Twin City my home. I was born to loving parents in 1965. It was during my childhood years that I realized that my interests and emotions tended towards what society dubbed “feminine”. Like many transgendered folk, I kept the secret to myself for many years; only venturing as far as an androgynous appearance at times.

It was my wonderful SO who first encouraged me to accept who I was and enjoy the possibilities therein. After attending events like Southern Comfort and meeting kindred spirits in organizations such as the Triad Gender Association, I realized that I was throwing away a significant portion of my life by hiding. These days, I’m out and very happy to be able to experience the world in a way that most will never know. As for gender labels, I can only say that I’m on a journey of discovery.

After graduating from Gardner-Webb University, I entered the field of Information Technology; an area which still intrigues me all of these years later. With an eye towards teaching, I earned an M.S. degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Outside of my “eight to whenever” stint in Corporate America, I am a part-time college instructor and teach the occasional computer literacy course for the public library. I am also serving as Volunteer Coordinator for Triad Pride 2007.

My interests are literally all over the map. I LOVE to travel and am in the process of planning a year-long sabbatical to work with volunteer organizations around this small world of ours in the hopes of contributing something other than a few extra dollars to my employer’s bottom line. (If you know of any such organizations that need a hand, please let me know!) I’m an avid cyclist and also enjoy making jewelry in my spare time. I’ve embarrassed myself in clubs from The Castro to Atlanta with my lack of grace on the dance floor and am really partial to trance/house rhythms; even though a lady my age should know better!

I can frequently be found with my nose in a book; usually something in the genres of history, travelogue, gender studies or science fiction. One text I recently enjoyed was “Stonewall” by Martin Duberman. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the roots of present-day GLBT rights efforts.

From a foodie point of view, I am always on the lookout for ethnic cuisine. Asian is by far my favorite and I can be found at Szechuan Palace in Winston-Salem on least one evening out of the week. Chocolate is a passion; much to the dismay of my waistline. As a result, Lane Bryant is both a curse and my best friend - LOL!

Most importantly, I love making new friends and bringing together people with common interests. In that regard, I have thought about seeing if there was any interest in the GLBT community for a Bible study group or a drumming circle (well, I did say that my interests were varied!). If either of these ideas sparks an interest, let’s chat!

I would like to thank John and the board members of A.R.T. for allowing me to be a part of this valuable electronic resource. Our community is all the richer for their efforts.

Take Care,

Angie

Our Mission: The objective of the Triad Softball League is to promote a social environment through amateur athletics with special emphasis on the participation of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in an atmosphere of friendly competition.

The Triad Softball League was formed during the summer of 2003 when a small group of people began meeting at a local ball field to play some pick up games. Over that summer it was realized that we might have something going on here and two teams formed, t-shirts were passed out and every Sunday a friendly game of softball was played. The next summer we had four teams. That fall as four teams formed we hired umpires and team insurance was purchased. We were an official league in the eyes of the Amateur Softball Association. As we head into our sixth season we have gained a lot more ball players and we have personally lost a few. Last season one of our players went to play in the big field in the sky.

Kathryn Smith, even in death, continues to reach out to us, with a donation from her estate. We are very grateful for this and are naming the end of season tournament in her memory. The Kathryn Smith Memorial Tournament will give every team a chance at the championship! We think Kathryn would have liked that.

Gary Palmer

April 2007

I was born in Chicago in 1952 when Harry S. Truman was President of the United States. My parents had moved from the South searching for a better living. My Father grew up in Mississippi where his father was a sharecropper. My mom grew up in Kentucky where her father was a fisherman on the Mississippi River. They married at a young age and neither finished high school.

We moved a lot. I lived in Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee and California all before the 2nd grade. I was fortunate to be able to spend my 6th-9th grades in the same town in California. We moved to Nampa, Idaho my sophomore year, where I graduated from high school.

My father became a Pentecostal preacher when I was in the 7th grade. As so many people did in those years, I attempted to repress the fact that I was attracted to men. I didn't date during high school and tried to ignore my increasing attraction to guys.

I was the first in my family to go to college. I attended Lee College (now a university) which was a private Church of God college. I received a Batchelor's Degree in Biology and Education. I went to graduate school at Western Kentucky University where I

received a Master's Degree in Education. Still repressing that I was gay, I married and had two children. It was only in my late 20's that I finally had to address the fact that I was gay. It was a very hard time. I couldn't imagine living apart from my children.

Religion played a huge role in my early life. I tried as hard as possible to do things right. I didn't drink or smoke or get into

trouble. I lived by the rules and wasn't rebellious. Yet I struggled with the fact that I was gay while being taught that it was sinful.

Over the years I've come to believe, as my Unity Church teaches, that, "There is only one ultimate power in the Universe. That power is God and its nature is absolute, unchanging good. Human beings were created from absolute good and so our inherent nature is also good."

I moved to Greensboro in 1983 when about the only things that existed in the gay community were bars. Fortunately, our community started growing shortly after that and I became involved with gay groups as they materialized. I became involved with ART in the late '80s and was President of ART in the early '90s, the first president of GLASS, the gay teen support group and one of the original board members of GGF.

Going to work at Replacements in 1992 was a huge blessing. I no longer had to worry about being openly gay. Bob Page was supportive of all my gay activist activities and instigated my involvement in the committee that created the Triad Business and Professional Guild. I have served on the board of THP and the granting committee for GCAP. I founded the GLSEN chapter in1997, working to create positive change for LGBT students in high schools. I now lead the GSAFE group whose purpose is

very similar.

One of the great pleasures of working at Replacements is that I have been able to incorporate my work, Vice President Community Affairs, into being a visible gay person in a lot of community organizations and activities. I was part of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce Class of 2000 leadership program, Other Voices and a member of the 2001 class of

Leadership Greensboro. In 2003 I received the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Greensboro Medal and in 2006 the Chamber of Commerce Other Voices Change Agent Award. I now serve on the board of the United Way

of Greater Greensboro, the board of the National Conference for Community and Justice - Piedmont and the granting committee for the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. In addition I am involved with the Community Education Committee headed by the new Guilford County Schools diversity officer Monica Walker. This group is working to improve acceptance of differences in schools and works to address the issues of racism in our schools. I have served on the steering committee of the Bennett College for Women Chief Diversity Officer's Forum since its beginning in 2004.

I'm very involved in politics and was able to serve as an alternate delegate at the 2000 National Democratic Convention in Los Angeles. I am fortunate to meet a lot of candidates when they meet with Bob at Replacements or at functions he has sponsored.

My children are grown and I'm very excited that I will be a grandfather in June! My daughter and her husband are missionaries in Managua, Nicaragua. My daughter teaches science at a high school there and her husband works with the Nehemiah Center. My son finished his bachelor's degree and is now working on a Master's Degree. I live with two lazy cats, Frosty and Lancelot.

I've been single since 1985 and while I would like to have a husband, don't spend very much time looking. My favorite television show is "Brothers and Sisters". I also really like "Ugly Betty," "The Class," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Scrubs". Anderson Cooper is my favorite news personality. I used to be an avid science fiction and fantasy reader but don't get much time to read anymore. I loved the Harry Potter books.

I'm proud of all of the development of the gay community in Greensboro. We are becoming one of the best places to live in North Carolina.

Gary

Brian R.

February 2007

Hello! My name is Brian R. I was born on February 22, 1978, in Winston-Salem, NC. This year will be my first annual 29th birthday. I still feel like a kid; I am such a dork and so proud of it, but I can be a mature adult when I need to be... only when I need to be, though!

I am out to everyone, as just me! I am fortunate to have a family that is more than tolerant of me and the things I do. I have close friends, both gay and straight, that appreciate my diversitivity. I enjoy NASCAR and football, even if I do kiss guys and enjoy it. People get so caught up in "gay is this" and "straight is that". I am gay and refuse to hide it. I am proud of the whole "me", more so than any one aspect of me. The initial coming out was not easy, but the life I live now is so much more enjoyable than the lies and cover-ups of before.

I grew up in a Christian School. I attended Gospel Light Christian School in Walkertown from the time I was five until I graduated. I have very mixed emotions about my time spent there, but am very proud to have served on the student council and win three state championships with my baseball team. After two years at Milligan College in Tennessee, where I was a cheerleader one year, I transferred to UNCG, where I graduated with a B.A. in Psychology. I have worked in my family's metal fabrication business since I was barely able to operate a stapler, doing everything from filing to running machining equipment. Now, I am the Manufacturing Assistant (do not ask what that means). My favorite part of my job is that I am allowed to organize out outreach efforts. The last two years, we have adopted children off of local angel trees for Christmas. Even though we only have about 75 employees, we were able to provide a happy Christmas for 32 children this year.

Besides watching Carolina basketball and Andy Roddick tennis, my hobbies include playing racing and sports games, DDR (Dance, Dance, Revolution) on XBox, jumping on my trampoline, bowling in the GLBT league from November to March, playing softball from March to November on six different teams, including a gay traveling team, writing poetry, which I am looking into having published. When not involved in any of these things, I can be found lying on the couch watching South Park, Family Guy, Rosanne, Anderson Cooper 360, or on the computer looking at things that my mom said are supposed to make me go blind.

You may reconize me from being a calendar model for A.R.T.'s Guys of the Triad 2007 Calendar, I am Mr. May 2007 in the Calendar. During the creation of the calendar it was a lot of fun, I had so much fun running around in my underware and waving at people passing by on the street during the photo shoot. I tagged along with Alternative Resources of the Triad to the NC Pride in September 2006 and helped in the promotion of the Calendar and loved every minute of it. I have met so many great new friends and continue to meet people from doing this project. If you see me out, get me to sign your calnedar. I am always happy to do this for you.

I am not a big reader (remember, I like looking at the pictures), though I do like to write. If I read, it is usually news articles, editorials, or something on human rights or sports related. My favorite book is "It's Not About the Bike" by Lance Armstrong. He is such an inspiration with his defeat of testicular and brain cancer on his way to a record seven consecutive Tour Du France Championships.

My favorite dessert would have to be birthday cake with ice cream. I could not live without birthday cake and ice cream. Birthday cake alone is heaven to me, especially with big globs of icing. White cake with either white or chocolate icing from Lowes Food is my favorite.

Yes, I am single. I am waiting for Mr. Roddick (Andy Roddick, pro tennis player) or Tyler Hansbrough (UNC basketball) or even that guy that now works at my bank, whom I was drooling over the other day (I wonder if he will read this?). I seem to always be the one who "makes the move" or shows interest in the relationship. I am kinda hoping for someone compatible to show interest in me... buy me dinner, send me flowers, and all that romance which I love to give to them. Plus, being single can be good as long as you take advantage of that time to spend with your friends and family. The last two years I have had one boyfriend, but made countless special friends.

I try to enjoy life and have fun no matter what I am doing. I love spending time with my family too. I have two sisters, one younger and one older. Both are married. My older sister has a daughter, and the two of us are always getting in to mishief together. All of us, plus my best friend, Bryan, go to Colorado to snow ski each winter. In addition to snow skiing, I also love to water ski, wake board, and ride my Sea Doo on Belew's Lake.

I have three piercings and four tattoos, and I will be getting another one for my birthday in February. That is pretty much all about me. I do not want to bore anyone anymore than I already have:)

I would like to thank OutGreensboro for choosing me. I am honored and consider this a great pleasure!

Brian R.

Robbi Cohn

January 2007

Wow, I am honored! Before I go on, let me take the time to say just what a thrill it is to have you choose me for the Spotlight. I still can not believe it.

My name is Robbi Cohn. I was born in September, 1951, in a small town called Bryn Mawr, PA. I am a trans-gendered individual. To be more specific, I am a pre-operational trans-sexual. I am going from male to female. I am single, open, and out to the ENTIRE world.

I do not have a lot of free time, but when I find it, I enjoy music, photography, cooking, crocheting and am a political junkie. I drive myself crazy trying to keep up with nutty politics. I also am a licensee of the Grateful Dead. I am a member of TGA (a support group), a peer tutor and scribe at Davidson County Community College, on the HRC Carolinas Steering Committee, a member of the Triad Business and Professional Guild, a member of the IT-NC, NCTE and NTAC.

My favorite food is leg of lamb, and my favorite dessert is REAL Boston Cream Pie. I read a smorgasbord of materials. As for novels, I am attracted to Fantasy. As of late, I am reading Jacqueline Cary. She is my favorite. I read anything dealing with gender identity, history, and politics. I also read Parabola regularly and local newspapers. I love the New York Times, when I get time.

As for spiritual realization, I am a hard core New Ager! I often describe myself as a Jewish Wiccan Buddhist with Tao and Native American proclivities... rather eclectic, I know. I am a practicing astrologer. I read tarot and I Ching. I meditate and do yoga when motivated.

I have generally always been a counter culture person my whole life. I was a touring Deadhead for years. I was an extremely active anti war protester in the Vietnam era. I was a member of the SDS, so activism is nothing new to me. I suppose the strangest thing about me, considering my Bohemian tendencies, is that it took as long as it did for the Trans Gendered genie to finally get OUT of the damn bottle.

OK, you better stop me. I can talk forever!! I will be happy to answer any questions your readers may have. Just ask me! Again, I am still in absolute shock that you were interested in spotlighting lil ol me!! Thanks to you and your organization for doing such a great job and service to the community.

Robbi

Chad Gray (a.k.a. Paisley Parque)

December 2006

Chad Gray Taylor was born in Winston Salem, NC, on December 15, 1971, and raised in the Oak Ridge community as an only child. I graduated from Northwest Guilford High School in 1990, and attended GTCC and High Point University. Although I have had several unremarkable jobs, I have been gainfully, successfully, and happily employed with American Express for the last twelve years. I have a part-time job working the front door at Warehouse 29 (located at 1011 Arnold Street in GSO.)

I have always known I was different from other boys and other little sissies. I saw my first drag show in the fall of 1990. My best girl-friend Jennifer, (Wink-wink - you know who you are!), took me to Club XTC where I saw the legendary entertainers Paris LeBon, Nancy Newton, and Elgin Kenna. I knew right then that I was destined to spend eternity in high-heeled pumps.

I entered a talent show in October of 1990 (as Marlena Karrington) and won first runner-up. You could not tell me that I was not fabulous. It was not until Christmas of that same year that (after several name changes) I became Paisley Parque. Paisley was derived from Prince's old record label - Paisley Park Records. I loved the way the name sounded and it had the same pattern as my newly acquired drag mother, Paris LeBon.

From that point on, I burned the interstates up traveling to and from any bar that would let me practice my newly found obsessive-talent. Thanks to the staff of The Castle in Greenville, SC, I finally won a talent show, beating several (a good baker's dozen) skinny bitches by actually dancing the house down. I was hot then, and knew I had started something that would likely carry me into my future.

I won my first title, Miss Earth, as part of the Solar System Pageant. That was at the Palms, now the parking lot for the Grasshopper's baseball team. I was a regular in Marilyn River's Rock-N-Roll Review for ten years with Marilyn Rivers and Miss Jasmine Vaughn. With role models like that, I quickly learned the ins and outs and how to be a true diva.

My titles have included Miss NC Solar System, Miss NC Summer Fun, Miss NC Marti Gras, Miss Greensboro USofA, Miss NC USofA at Large, and currently Miss Warehouse 29. (Yes, I know I have left a few out here and there. It's not that I am ungrateful, but space is limited!)

I have been to Texas as a competitor in Miss Gay USofA at Large twice. My first time there, I was named the best non-finalist (thirteenth), and the second time I cracked the code of excellence and made the finals as one of the top twelve.

I am a star - I appeared in the independent and widely acclaimed film, The Immaculate Reception. (If you have never heard of this movie, see Olive Oyl - she can fill you in!) I have been shining for three years in the Sex Kitten Roundup on the second Wednesday of each month at Warehouse 29. It is definitely not your average drag show. I am the owner/moderator of http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dragqueensnc/ (the NC drag queen's group for all the "gurls" who want to be in the know for what is going on in NC.) There are currently over 1000 members and growing each day. I would love to see this group continue to expand as January 2007 marks its fifth year anniversary.

Yes, the rumors are true! I have so many costumes, shoes, wigs, shoes, dresses, shoes, gowns, shoes, make-up and shoes that my spare bedroom looks like drag threw up everywhere. But, I am addicted to female impersonation (Gwen Stephani - at large, Madonna - at large, May West, Boy George, Kelly Osbourne, and I have even been known to break out a little Mama Cass (from the Mamas and the Papas.) I just enjoy what I do! I have also always been glad to help the young "gurls" with advice when asked. I currently have two drag daughters (that I am claiming), Miss Raven Wood and Miss Angelica Dust!

I would like for everyone out there to know that I am a very likable person, both in and out of drag. Chad is not as out going as Paisley. She has even been known to get on a few nerves when she gets all wound-up. Don't be shy about approaching either one of us. It always amuses me to hear whispers of, "that is Paisley Parque - I wish I could talk to her!", as I am pushing a buggy through Wal-Mart at 2:00 AM. Come on up and just say hello! I love my fans and loyal supporters.

I would like to thank John and board members of OutGreensboro for allowing me to be the first drag queen featured here. It is truly an honor. You can see more photos of me and join my MySpace at www.myspace.com/paisleyparque .

Love and lashes,
Paisley Parque

Nate is also really big with spending time with his closet friends. Nate says "I'm a strong believer that you need to spend as much time as you can with the people you care about because you never know when you might lose them. Nate loves rap and hip hop. Not just any, but floor thumping, crunk gangsta rap! Nate loves any type of music that has a great beat too, 80's, Madonna, Duran Duran, He also likes good vocal trance and underground techno.

Nate does say that he is a dreamer and that he longs to be one day successful and have lots of money and a house on the hills. Not to mention being beside the one that he loves the most in his entire life.Nate loves to be romantic, give massages and Nate loves kissing. He says that "You might even call me a "hopeless romantic", because no one seems to appreciate his romance as much as he does. When it comes to the zodiac, he says he is the spitting image of what a Capricorn should be. Read the character traits---if you don't like what you read, you probably won't like him he says.

Now here is what everyone is really waiting for! Nate says he is currently involved in a relationship.

I remember the first time that I came across Nate. He is a very handsome guy. You just can not help but to look at him. He is a very outgoing and charming guy. He is is very likeable, he has that frat boy look but yet he has that boy next door look that just makes you go oh, how sweet. You look into his eyes and they just make you melt away is what everyone says. When you run into Nate, be sure to stop and say hi and do mention that you seen his profile on OutGreensboro.com.

Jarrius Lindsay

October 2006

Hey everybody, what's up? My name is Jarrius Lindsay and I am a gay fitness entrepreneur from High Point NC. I am 22 yrs. old and although I haven't been in High Point all my life I have lived in North Carolina my whole life. I graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts as a drama major in the the high school program. I then transferred as a college freshman into the dance program as a modern dancer but didn't stay long because it wasn't truly full filling to me. No matter how hard I worked it just wasn"t rewarding. So I knew I had to leave!

I have starred in and done numerous plays such as "Grease" where I was Danny, yes we believed in a black Danny! " Night" by Elie Weisel and many others, Ive also competed in classical singing competitions.

I have been out since I was seventeen, oh yeah I've always been rebellious. I've always done my own thing no matter who loved or hated it, not because I wanted attention but because that's just how I am, I swear! When I was very young my parents could tell that I didn't like playing with boys "in the traditional since" and that I would much rather play with the girls. Because of this all throughout my entire childhood I was mentally, verbally, and physically abused by both parents, and in my opinion it's the mental abuse that's hurts most because that stays with you for years down the road if not your entire life. Its because of my harsh past that I've decided to start my own business's that is focused on the GLBT of the triad, but more on that later.

And for all that its worth I am very, very single!

Jarrius

Shane Burton

September 2006

Shane was born on May 23 and is originally from Greensboro. He attended Appalachian State University to gain a BA in English and History and to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro were Shane worked towards a Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies.

Shane works full time at the Triad Health Project center as their Director of Community Involvement since 2005 as well as being a bartender at Liberty Oak Restaurant in Downtown Greensboro.

Shane is openly gay to everyone. Shane was asked if he was seeing anyone at this time and his reply is that he is single. (yea for the single guys out there)

His names his greatest accomplishment as, "Being proud of who I am." Favorite Quote is "Lance Bass, Yes I am also Gay! I also add that I am many different things besides gay." Like Lace I am many different things - I am a son, a friend, a proud parent to my dog, an avid reader, a snow-skier, etc. I am proud to simply be who I am, and very proud that one of the many things that I am is a gay man.

Plans for the Future: Shane hopes to continue his work in the Non Profit sector, buy a house at the beach, go sky diving (WOW), and to fit back into the jeans that he wore in college before he turns 25.

Shane is a great guy to get to know. He is a very friendly outgoing person. Shane always has a smile for everyone. Actually I have never seen him not smiling. I would recommend everyone to stop in for a drink at Liberty Oak Restaurant on West Washington Street of Downtown Greensboro and visit Shane there.
